A Love Letter to Lulu La Delizia

Conjure up an excuse for a Perth work trip if you want to try Australia's best pasta

The first time I visited Lulu La Delizia in Subiaco, there was a guy sitting a couple of seats away eating what appeared to be the perfect solo dinner.

He started with a plate of bread, butter and sugo, alongside a negroni. That morphed into a bottle of Acqua Panna and a neat plate of prawn, zucchini and chilli orecchiette.

The outrageous simplicity of it.

I was with a friend which was lovely of course, but a part of me wanted to swap places with that guy, so I'd have the bandwidth and lack of distraction to focus on every bitter sip of spirit, every nubbly little ear of pasta. The staff was giving him the kind of attention usually reserved for someone like Nigella Lawson (who's also a confirmed Lulu La Delizia fan). Their attentiveness was a testament to a front-of-house team that believes in what they do, and are thrilled that someone's taking the time to enjoy it alone.

And what I came to realise, as my own food began to arrive at my table, is that if you're going to solo dine in Perth, Lulu's is the place to do it.
