"I acknowledge the extreme hurt and harm to Cate Sayers occasioned by the suggestion that has been circulating that she posted or may have posted an explicit image on my X account," barrister Sandip Mukerjkea read aloud in the Supreme Court of Victoria on Friday on behalf of his client Luke Sayers. "I accept that she did not do this. To the extent that I may have suggested otherwise, I apologise unreservedly to her."
It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that Cate Sayers has squibbed her seemingly immense advantage and leverage by settling this matter for such an absurdly qualified mea culpa. To the extent he may have suggested? He swore it in a statutory declaration!
Cate is entitled to be extremely aggrieved by what Luke did to her, particularly the exploitation (or even invention) of her sexual abuse history for his own ends. That is not one bridge too far, it is an ocean of hurt.
